5 Cool Swimming Pool Games For Summertime Fun

Playing fun swimming pool games helps develop motor, sensory, and social skills. These cool water activities are also great for summertime family time.

Divide players into teams and assign one player to be “Marco.” They blindfold themselves and try to tag the Polos, who yell out "Polo!" when Marco tries to find them.

Floating Corn Hole

Bring the tail-gating classic to your pool this summer with the Swimline Floating Corn Hole. This inflatable bean bag target toss lets you beat the heat and still have fun with friends. Whether you call it Cornhole, bags, or bag toss, this floating game will keep the laughs going all summer long.

It's easy to play, just aim and throw. You can play the traditional way, scoring points for hitting the targets on the board, or get creative and assign different scores based on which color stripe the bag lands in.

The set includes one corn hole board and a full set of 8 colored bean bags that all float on water. This is perfect for the backyard or to take with you to the beach or lake.

Double Dare

Double Dare is a classic Nickelodeon game show that first aired in 1986 and remains in syndication. Although it would return years later as Double Dare 2000, the original gak-soaked show is one of the network’s most memorable eras.

Marc Summers originally had no interest in hosting a children’s TV show. He wanted to be a legitimate game show host like Bob Barker, who treated kids with respect.

The physical challenges on Double Dare were often complete messes, especially when the set was covered in that slippery linoleum. The crew figured out how to clean up quickly and keep the challenge going. One of their more memorable obstacles was the Car Wash, which involved a child squeezing through foam blocks in a stream of water.

Monkey in the Middle

This is a simple, fun game that's good for kids of all ages. The way it works is players throw a ball back and forth between them, trying to prevent one player, the "monkey," from catching the ball.

To decide who the monkey is, you could flip a coin or have someone answer a quick-fire question incorrectly to see who gets the honor. When the 'monkey' is chosen, have them stand in the middle of the two other players.

Players then begin throwing the ball at each other while trying to avoid the 'monkey.' If the 'monkey' successfully intercepts a pass or grabs the ball, they get to switch places with the player who threw the ball. This makes the game more challenging as the rounds go on.

Tag the Fish

Fish tags provide valuable information about a fish population. By reporting tagged fish, you help scientists understand movement patterns, age structure, and other vital characteristics that contribute to healthy fish stocks.

To tag a fish, place the tag over its mouth and press down firmly. Avoid tagging very active fish, as this may injure the fish or cause the tag to shed. If you are unsure whether or not a fish is tagged, look for a phone number or address printed on the fish’s side, or check for a “tag” icon in the Lexicon.

The Lexicon’s fish tags inform players about the fish’s attributes, such as how it can be caught or if it is connected to current running events. These new fish tags were contributed by Ami Staples, tagging biologist for the NCDMF Multi-Species Tagging Program.

Swim Across the Pool

If your swimmers are ready to move on from the beginner games, try Swim Across the Pool. This game is a great way to practice sighting and to improve their ability to follow their lane mates.

To play, have one person get out of the pool and stand where they can see all of the players. This player is the leader and they can do whatever they want – dog paddle, backstroke, underwater – but the rest of the players must mimic them exactly. If they can’t keep up, they are eliminated.

The last person left is the winner! If you have enough people, you can do multiple rounds. A great way to increase the challenge is to play with teams. Swim Across the Pool is also a fun competition that helps kids learn how to compete.
